Kitchen With (Lots of) Stuff

I swear that you can cook in 4′ by 9′ of kitchen. Remember my plan? Here it is.

Happy about Tacos

I do believe NO ONE has ever fit more kitchen stuff into a space this small ever before. Well, perhaps they have, but holy moly, there’s stuff in every square inch of this kitchen. You can’t even see the stuff under the sink. But everything is easily within reach while cooking. I’ve got spices and pans and spoons and bowls and everything. It’s truly excellent. I tried to make it look decent too.

The extra small kitchen

I was cooking black bean tacos here. The main issue with this kitchen is not the space, actually, it’s that TERRIBLE STOVE. The top of it tends to slide around. You know, completely OFF. Which is not optimal when cooking. And three out of four of the burners won’t lie flat enough to cook on, even with water in the pan weighting it down. We’re discussing this with the landlord. A repairman came and took a look and said it looks like I need a new one. I agree.

The extra small kitchen

Anyway, if you think I can’t cook a five-course dinner in here, you’re wrong. I would. Just for the challenge. To see if I could.

Here’s some more pictures. I was having fun taking them. By the way, if you’re reading this via email, you can’t see the slideshow via email, you’ll have to visit my website to see them.

That is a small kitchen but you make it work, girl! I was kinda living with my then boyfriend now husband when he had his first flat, 600 sq. feet total, convertible. Meaning it had that sliding door that closed off where the bed was from where the couch and tv was. Are you in New York? And i’ve never seen a picture of you before. You are too cute cooking in your kitchen!

I knew you’d figure it out. With the mind of a crafter and a cook it was destines to happen.

Aw, thanks :)

My apt is 650 sq feet, total, and has 5 rooms including the bathroom. No room is big, but it’s big enough. And actually I’m not in New York, but I know what you mean. I lived in Manhattan for 2 years and DC for three (and miss them both) and my apartments were smaller than this one, and the kitchens were of comparable size. This one is more challenging because they opted for a double sink instead of any counter space, and really didn’t make the best use of space for cabinets, etc. My kitchen in New York had a closet, fridge, stove, sink and mondo storage space in about 8′ x 8′. It was a miracle of well-thought-out space. This one I had to do the thinking for it.

And I’m not too big on pictures of myself. This is I believe the fourth one of me I’ve posted in 3.5 years!

WOW! You are amazing! I had no clue when I saw your kitchen how a foodie like you would survive! But remember, I’ll be your back up counter ;-)

Excellent! Do I recognize some IKEA hooks and organizational tools in those photos? From visiting their showroom I learned to use vertical space (hanging junk on walls, mainly) to maximize space. Are you hosting Thanksgiving?

AW – I’m really not sure you can negotiate storage in a small space without visiting Ikea for *something*. I mean, maybe if you’re very wealthy and can afford to fabricate everything, but why bother?

PJ – So how do you feel about having your kitchen taken over for canning?
